We’ve been eager to go on the Underground River tour when we visited Palawan as we want to experience first hand what it’s like to visit one of the new 7 Wonders of Nature. We booked our tour with Northern Hope Tours for P1400 each. It’s not cheap so we hoped it’s all worth it. Gladly, our decision paid off as it was such a great experience. Read on to know more about our tour.

We arrived at Puerto Princesa City Airport from Manila at around 6AM. After getting our things, I immediately called Northern Hope Tours to guide us on which van should we aboard going to Sabang for the Underground River Tour. After 10 minutes, my phone rang and it was the tour guide for the UR Tour. We then aboard their van and proceeded to pick-up other tourists in their hotels nearby.

A group of Chinese tourists were checked in the Princesa Garden Island Resort & Spa Hotel. Our tour guide told us that it is the first luxurious 5 star hotel in Puerto Princesa. It was nice that we got to be in the Hotel even just in the entrance.

After some minutes (or was it several minutes?), we then proceeded to Sabang for the tour.

Our tour guide was nice and he was enthusiastic on telling stories about Palawan and its places. He also tells jokes from time to time to avoid boredom and dead air.

Upon arrival, we waited a bit in the port for our boat ride going to the Underground river. Our tour guide also arranged all the necessary permits for our tour. If you are going to DIY this tour, it is advisable to get your permits in advance.

Waiting at Sabang Port. Don’t forget to bring water.

Upon arrival, we were greeted by a nice beautiful sandy beach and photographers. We were like actors then lol.

Welcome to Underground River!

Our tour guide then lead us through a small forest that leads to the Underground River. There were a number of tourists that day so we have to wait a little bit for our turn to enter the mystical cave. Of course, what else to do while waiting? Take pictures!

After taking some pictures, it’s our turn to explore the Underground River! Make sure you wear your safety helmets and life jacket before entering the majestic cave because you’ll never know what hits you! 🙂

This is the entrance to the cave. Before entering, I had a weird feeling that I was like Dante in Dante’s Inferno. It’s like I’m aboard Charon’s boat rowing across river Acheron to Hell proper.

Underground River Cave Entrance

“Abandon hope all ye who enter here!”. Just kidding, it’s beautiful inside.

Once inside the cave, I was relieved that it was not the eternal flames of Hell that I was stupidly imagining but rather a cooly cave with the magnificent beauty of numerous stalactites and stalagmites.

Unfortunately, I didn’t take a lot of pictures when we were inside because I really wanted to appreciate the beauty of the place and it was dark and we were not allowed to use flash so our pictures would really just be like dark crap. Anyway, for me, you really have to experience all of this by yourself and appreciate the beauty of it on your own. You also wont be bored looking at the rock formations since the boat pilot has numerous jokes for most of it.

After our amazing Underground River experience, we just went outside to the jungle, relaxed a bit and hang out with this large lizard. Yeah, he was just roaming around the jungle, untied, doing his thing scaring people. Just his normal day in the office.

After all of us in the group completed our river tour, it’s time to bid goodbye. All in all, it was such an amazing tour and experiencing firsthand what’s like to be in a place considered as one of the new wonders of nature, is truly humbling and proud that we have this in our country.

PS: The lunch included in the tour is a buffet lunch in one of the eateries in Sabang. Food is nothing special, so don’t expect much. Though, you can try the infamous Tamilok there as locals will be offering you to try it. You have to pay for it as it is not included in the package.
