Hey Bear Capsule Hotel Review – New Taipei City

Hey Bear Capsule Hotel Review – New Taipei City

The first time I saw and knew about capsule hotels was on a travel show on TV. They featured the capsule hotels in Japan and my first impression was “Can you really sleep comfortably in that very tight space? It’s like a coffin.” But at the same time, I thought it to be a very cool experience and will someday like to try that.

Well, we just did it in Taiwan. I knew about Hey Bear capsule hotel from the travel group I am in. A member posted pics and said that they only paid P400 for a bed. Cool and cheap. We now have a place to stay in Taipei.

If you’re a follower of our blog, you do know that we have 3 criteria on choosing an accommodation. Location, cleanliness and price. Let’s discuss each criteria and see if Hey Bear fits the bill.

Hey Bear Capsule Hotel is located in SanChong District in New Taipei City. Don’t be confused with New Taipei and Taipei City. It’s two different cities but are very close to each other. Now, even though Hey Bear isn’t located in central Taipei, it is very much accessible due to the close proximity of the nearest train station, Taipei Bridge MRT. So close that you just have to cross the street to get there! How’s that for convenience!

Taipei Bridge MRT is just 5 train stops away from Taipei Main station and 2 stops away from the Tamsui-Xinyi red line where most of the tourist spots are located.

How to get there from Taoyuan airport

The train from the airport to Taipei Main station is now operational. Click here for the time table. Unfortunately, it only runs from 6am to 11pm. So if you’re arriving past midnight, you won’t be able to catch the last train. You’d either go for the bus ride or sleep at the airport and wait for the first train going to Taipei. You can take Bus 1819 operated by Kuo-Kuang Motor. It’s a 1hr ride from the airport to Taipei main station for 125 NTD. Click here for more info about the routes and fare.

If you arrive in Taipei main station at past midnight, then you have to take a cab going to Hey Bear. But if not, then you can take the train and alight at Taipei Bridge MRT station then cross the street to get to Hey Bear.

Sometimes we really like staying in hostels that are out of the main city because you get to see more of the country’s culture besides concrete buildings and commercial establishments. Hey Bear’s location is a mix of both. There are residents living nearby and lots of small eateries where locals eat and cheaper too. If you’re interested, they have a food map in their website. Check it here.

Let’s discuss about the capsule beds first. We booked two capsule beds in a 4-bed mixed dorm. One capsule bed is spacious and can actually fit me and my wife so we just put our things in the other bed and slept together. I think this is ok as long as you pay for your own bed and you don’t do things that would disturb your roommates. You know what I mean right? Just sleep soundly 😀

The capsule is complete with a 32″ LED TV, big fluffy pillows, warm blanket (good enough for two), security box, air-conditioning and electrical /usb outlet. The capsule have a cool control panel and you’ll feel like you’re in a spaceship especially when you turn on the blue backlights.

The pillows, blanket and bed sheets are all whitey clean, no stains and very comfortable. They’ll provide you a headset to plug in when you want to watch TV so you won’t disturb people who wants to have a quiet and peaceful sleep.

The room’s clean (a trash can is provided inside the room) and well maintained. The toilet is clean too considering it’s a shared bathroom for all the guests in your floor. They do provide shower gel and shampoo in the showers. Sometimes, just like any other shared bathrooms in hostels, you’ll encounter people who just don’t know how to use a toilet properly. Don’t be that dude.

Price and How to Book

Considering the location, amenities, cleanliness, service and a cool capsule bed, the price is awesome! For just P500 net (including hotel service charge) or around 310 NTD per bed per night in a mixed capsule room, it’s a sweet deal. No breakfast included though but that’s ok! Lots of cheap options outside.

We booked through Agoda and I suggest you book there too. Just don’t walk-in and book through the reception because the cost will be higher than booking online. If you don’t want to book in advance, you can do the booking in the reception area. They provide a computer there for you to book. We did this for booking our last night there.

If you’re a lady (especially solo travelers), you can book a bed in a female dorm room but expect it to cost a little bit more than the mixed room.

Book here through Agoda.

Overall, it was a very pleasurable stay. We had a calm, peaceful sleep that we often don’t expect in dorm rooms but in Hey Bear, it’s really different. I also like that the guests are respectful of your personal space. If Hey Bear is a bad hotel, we wouldn’t book for another night but since all of it are nice, we extended our stay.

This hotel is highly recommended!

I look sad because I want to stay for one more day lol.

Hi! Thanks for this informative blog! Would just like to ask if you have an idea of the taxi cost from Taipei Main Station to Hey Bear? We are arriving at 1am and the MTR is already closed at that time. Thanks!

I heard hey bear is great so I booked thru agoda on our stay. I used a credit card of my friend’s friend then after booking there’s an important note saying I should bring the credit card used plus ID of the card owner (which is not a really close friend thats why I dont want toborrow his card). Strict ba ang agoda/hey bear sa policy na to? Thanks, man!

Can we book 3 capsules for a 4mixed room? Just checked agoda and it only allows us to book the entire room with 4 capsules. Thanks!

    • Hi Trish,

      Thanks for visiting!

You have to book 3 rooms (3 rooms = 3 beds) for the capsule mixed dormitory (the one with 1pax capacity).

Hi, we also booked in Hey Bear for our upcoming trip this July 24. Our arrival time is also 12:10 am the next day. We’re planning to just take taxi to the hotel maybe by 1 am but I saw on the confirmation email that check-in time is at 3pm. Could we still check-in earlier maybe by 2am? Thanks!

    • Hi Louise,

      Thanks for visiting!

Yes that’s ok… but you have to book July 24th for your first night (assuming July 24 is the date of your flight from MNL). Just let them know that you’re arriving late.

Thank you! Sorry I accidentally deleted my comment I was about to edit it but thanks for your response! 🙂

Hi! Thank you for sharing! Very helpful info! I was wondering of some few things.
    1. does each capsule has a lock?
    2. where dis you put your luggage?
    3. in case of check out will they allow you to leave your belonging with them? if yes how do they keep the bags?

    • Hi Jessica,

      Thanks for visiting!

      1) Yes. It even has a safety box.
      2) We booked two beds but my wife and I slept together in one bed so we put our things in the other bed. But they have lockers so you can put yours there.
      3) I saw luggages in the reception area, so I think you can leave your luggage there.
